IDFA's Jan Vrijman Fund supports filmmakers and festivals in developing countries. Its goal is to stimulate local film cultures and to turn the creative documentary into a truly global film art. 2007 marked the 10th year of the Jan Vrijman Fund.

Since 1998, the Fund has supported 247 documentary projects and 57 documentary festivals and workshops. At IDFA 2007, the Fund presented a selection of the films that have recently been made with its support. In 2008, the programme consists of 14 films that represent all the Southern continents and vary considerably in style. Films that deal with subjects ranging from political turmoil and its consequences to the exploration of religious cults.

Categories

Script and Project development: The maximum contribution for script and project development is €4,000.

Production and Post-production: The maximum contribution for production and post-production is €15,000.

Other activities: The maximum contribution is €15,000. In this category, the following activities will be considered for financial support:

• Support of local activities that aim to promote the documentary film genre, and that act as a meeting point for filmmakers and the audience (festivals, among other things). Besides financial support, JVF and IDFA can offer their know-how.

• Organisation of workshops, for filmmakers and producers from non-Western countries, dedicated to script development, production, distribution and sales, and marketing.

• Activities aimed at the distribution of documentaries in developing countries.
In addition to the festival, the Jan Vrijman Fund will also be present at this year's FORUM with three projects: The Last Two Tightrope Dancers (Vardan Hovhannisyanin, Armenia), The Caviar Connection (Dragan Nikolic, Serbia) and Vivan Las Antipodas! (Victor Kossakovsky, Russia).
